Technological advances in modern healthcare have produced a multitude of benefits for patients. Some of the most recent exciting achievements in medicine have been in the field of surgery. Previously, traditional surgery has been considered to be a major procedure associated with much morbidity and requiring a lengthy hospital stay. A surgical operation has always conjured up images of large incisions with a great deal of discomfort and a prolonged recovery period.

Today, thanks to advances in technology, many operations previously done through large incisions can now be performed through incisions the size of keyholes. Instead of one large cut extending across the entire stomach and abdomen, there are 3 to 4 small incisions made about the width of a pencil (5-10mm). Laparoscopic surgery or minimally invasive surgery is a safe and effective procedure that uses highly specialized equipment to perform complex surgical operations through these tiny incisions. A miniature video camera with a fiberoptic lens is used to visualize the precise details of the operation in the abdomen. Long, thin instruments are passed through trocars or access ports to perform these focused surgical procedures. Carbon dioxide, a normal physiologic gas, is introduced into the abdomen to create a working space for the operation, and is removed upon completion of the procedure.

BENEFITS

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Fewer pain medications necessary
  • Faster return to solid food diet
  • Quicker return of bowel function
  • Quicker return to normal activity
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Faster recovery
  • Better cosmetic results

Laparoscopic surgery provides tremendous benefits to patients as compared to traditional "open" surgery. With either approach, the actual operation performed inside the body is the same, the difference is the technique used to reach the surgical site. The laparoscopic approach uses smaller incisions and much less manipulation of the tissues as compared to "open" surgery to accomplish the same goal. This more focused surgical approach reduces tissue handling and trauma which brings a host of benefits to patients. These smaller incisions cause less pain, and therefore patients need fewer pain medications after surgery. There is a more rapid return of normal bodily functions following laparoscopic surgery. Most people are able to eat the night following a major laparoscopic operation, whereas with conventional surgery, patients are routinely unable to eat for many days. Following a laparoscopic procedure, patients are able to walk, climb stairs and pursue other activities with much greater ease than after conventional surgery. All of these benefits translate into a faster overall recovery after surgery, including less time in the hospital and a faster return to normal activities at home. Also, the tiny scars after laparoscopic surgery are miniscule as compared to the typical surgical scar seen with any conventional operation achieving more pleasing cosmetic results.
